Bio

Aaron Lee Benson is Professor of Art, Sculpture/Ceramics at Union University.  Betty Jane Benson is the Head of Benson Sculpture LLC.  They work mainly in large-scale architectural forms and large monolithic narratives. In the past five years they have begun to focus on developing a more socially conscious body of work.  Their works are often made with wood building studs.  After the work is shown the artists donated the wood to Habitat for Humanity and Habitat for Humanity International, which uses the lumber to build homes for low-income families in the local community.

Sculpture Description

Aaron and Betty Benson use scale to confront and draw the viewer into a psychological and emotional dialogue.  The structures become environments that the viewer can physically move into and explore.  Form is also a very significant component of their work.  They incorporate a hard-edged solidity using modular components to create a sense of power and strength of structure.  By combining scale with a vertical format, the Benson’s creates a sense of structural power.  These themes find their roots in mountainous terrain.
